I've just launched a new podcast series I'm hosting and producing for the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton and Halton. It's called Common Loss, and is about how dementia is cared for and dealt with in different cultures. But we began the series with a recording I made last night of a public lecture by
Dr. Paul Fraser, Principal Investigator, Centre for Research in
Neurodegenerative Diseases (CRND), University of Toronto.
Dr. Fraser's talk was titled "Alzheimer's Disease On the Road to Recovery" and was translated into Vietnamese, Arabic, Mandarin, Somali and French. The crowd of 200 at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington, Ontario was this great United Nations mix. You can see some of the audience members, these ones Somali women, on the right. Hope you enjoy the lecture, which will bring you up to speed on what we know and hope for in medical research to defeat dementia. You can check out more photos from the evening here.
Today the Toronto Star, Toronto's main newspaper, covered a Second Life photo/experience exhibit I helped the Alzheimer Society of Ontario put together a couple of months ago. The coverage was part of a special section the paper has put together on the disease. And, next week the Alzheimer Society of Hamilton Halton is going to be launching a podcast series on Alzheimer's disease across cultures. The series, which I'll be hosting, is called Common Loss. The first episode will be up on January 31. Hope you can tune in.
The evening was a great success! We had over 60 residents in attendance and raised just over $8,000 Linden dollars to help establish a permanent home for the ASO in Second Life. Thanks to Shadow Fugazi for curating and making her beautiful space available.
Check out all the pics here.
Over at techsoup.org, Brian Satterfield has just published an excellent set of case studies about how nonprofits are using intranets. I'm pleased to say that an intranet wiki I set up for one of my clients, the Alzheimer Society of Ontario, was featured. The intranet, called ensemble is based on Project Forum and a handful of other Web 2.0 tools. Brian did a create job of capturing the way we introduced the site at ASO.
The gala opening for the exhibition is December 14, at 5 p.m. SLT. You can drop by the Info Island Exhibit and Displays building (Info Island II 38,69,24) to check out the show. All Linden donations will go to helping the ASO furnish and equip a permanent educational space in Second Life. Hope you can check it out. If you do, please im me (Medium Helvetic) in game to say hi.
Curtis James just posted about the dandelife Web 2.0 tool. It allows you to place an incident from your life on a shared timeline. You can then search that timeline by date or tag. You can also add to other people's memories of events or places.
I'm really taken by the tool because of the work I do with the Alzheimer Society of Ontario. I imagine a lot of folks with early onset Alzheimer's using dandelife to share moments of their past with their children or grandchildren. Or, a variety of folks could use a common tag and help each other remember important stages or incidents in the past. I think this could have tremendous therapeutic value for caregivers and those with Alzheimer's. Thoughts anyone?
