Just got my Hitachi Pen-it working via Bluetooth with my Macbook Pro. Once I got the pairing code from Pen-it (it didn't come in the box, but the support folks promptly helped out), I had the pairing done in a minute. The Pen-it digital pen has a small camera built into the barrel. As you write on special Anoto functionality paper (it's got a micro-dot pattern printed on it) the camera records your path. As you can see on the right, it does a darned fine job. The text on the right is my lousy handwriting in the notebook. the text on the left is a printout of the capture by the pen. On my Mac, the capture is in vector format and can have keywords and comments attached to it for easy searching. As you can see, you can also add shapes and colours to the text. You can also go back to a page in your paper notebook and add additional writing or drawings and then resend the page and it will automatically update the electronic version of the notes. Very cool. Just starting to learn this thing, but I think, so far, it rocks!
As a new, and pretty frustrated right now, owner of a Hitachi Pen-it digital pen, I started a new group called Pen-it Pals. I think this could be a good product and the Pen-it team seem like hardworking but stretched folks, so I thought they could use a communal hand dealing with questions and probs. Right now I'm having problems pairing the pen to my laptop. The four digit pairing code was supposed to be in the box, but it wasn't. Looking for a solution. Thought a Vox group was in order :-) If you're a Pen-it owner, or are considering it, please drop by.
Just ordered Pen-It Notes after seeing Merlin Mann and Alex Lindsey demo it on the Macworld floor. It's a pen that can capture its position on special paper in minute increments and then can transmit its path via Bluetooth to my Macbook. So, writing on paper translates to digital imagery. It's based on Anoto technology, which I've been watching for about two years. Now I think its ready for prime time. More when I get the thing in about a month.
