Take This Tablet
I haven't been a fan of tablet computers. I first got interested in them in the early 90s when I was working with Roger Fidler at Knight-Ridder. Back then he had an R&D lab in the U.S. for the Knight-Ridder newspaper chain and I was running one in Canada for Southam Inc. Roger was keen on the tablet computer. I was lukewarm. I found the software and the form factor lacking. I was also an alpha tester for the Newton and, though I loved it, it died an untimely death and hadn't really reached maturity. And don't get me started about Windows-based tablets. Ugh.
All that said, I just bought a Nokia 770. It's a small, Unix-based tablet that I got sold on because it's got WiFi, Bluetooth and is hackable. What's not to love? I've just been using it a few days. It gloms onto WiFi Hotspots like a spaniel on a dropped sausage, pairs beautifully with my Treo 650 and displays websites quickly on a big, bright screen. So far it's a neat, compact browser that beats the screen on my Treo hands down. Will be replace my MacBook Pro? Nope, but for a lot of my commutes it is a viable travel alternative. I'll report more as I try it out.
